Clash of Clans is a game produced by the company Supercell. It is a free download available on all mobile platforms. In this game users build up their own town in a virtual world. The objective of the game is to attack other members of the game as well as defend your town from attackers. Gold and Elixir is collected at a certain rate per minute, depending on the level of the collectors. Users spend the gold and elixir on new defensive units, troops, spells, walls, or upgrades. The game gets more involved if the users decides to join a clan. In a clan, the user can request troops from their clan-mates. The clan can also choose to battle another clan during a clan war. In a clan war, each member of the clan has two opportunities to attack any opposing member. One star is awarded for destroying 50% of the opponent’s base, another star is given for destroying the opponent’s town hall, and a third star can be won by completely destroying the opponent 100%. This is a very popular game around the world with millions of users worldwide. The way I have seen it adapted is through the mathematical elements of the game. Everything in this virtual world has a mathematical value. Teachers can tap into this virtual world to teach students about place value, time, addition, subtraction, and multi-step problem solving. The engagement and motivation is already there for the students; it is just a matter of harnessing that excitement and turning it into a learning opportunity.
